Designed by Tamara Kate, the Lovely Day quilt pattern is a deep dive into applique.

We love how the shapes in each block are free-formed and organic, meaning that if you don't cut or stitch the shapes perfectly, the end result still looks wonderful.

We've designed our BOM program to include lots of instructions so that even if you're brand new to applique, you'll learn everything needed to complete this stunning quilt!

Tamara wrote the Lovely Day pattern for the raw edge fused applique technique, with the machine stitching done at the same time as the quilting. Our BOM video tutorials will cover her technique from start to finish so you can complete the quilt the way she designed it.

But wait, there's more!

Our BOM videos will also teach you how to applique using the needle turn applique method, which is stitched by hand. In our video tutorials you will learn all the steps to needle turn applique, including how to work with a pattern meant for fused applique.

You can choose to make the entire quilt with fused applique, needle turn applique, or mix and match the two techniques to learn them both!

In our sample, we fused all the blocks with a colored background and needle-turned the ones with a white background.

BOM Timeline

This BOM runs for 5 months from

November 2023 to March 2024, with 3 shipments, each a month apart to give you time to complete the applique.

The shipment months are November, January, and March.

Our program includes written instructions, all the fabric needed for the top and binding, fusible web for machine applique, and on-demand video tutorials.

Two size options

Lovely Day has 12 different applique blocks laid out in a 3x4 grid.

This results in a finished quilt that's a bit on the small size, finishing at only 41" x 54". We think it works beautifully as a wall hanging or lap quilt at this size.

But while we were stitching it up, we kept thinking about how great it would be to make it larger... so we put together a throw-size BOM option for you!

Lovely Day XL has 25 blocks laid out in a 5x5 grid. You'll make each of the 12 different applique blocks two times each, and then choose your favorite block to make a third time, to end up with 25 blocks.

Lovely Day XL finishes at 66" x 66".

FAQ

Q: What fabrics will I get?
A: All the fabrics are exactly the same as shown in the photo of the finished quilt. Each print was individually selected by Andrea for its particular color and pattern. They are all quilting cottons from manufacturers like Windham, Art Gallery and Robert Kaufman.

Q: I like this pattern but I don't want to use this fabric. Can I join the BOM without fabric?
A: This BOM is only available with fabric included. But it would be easy for you to swap out some fabrics from your own stash, for example if you wanted to change the white backgrounds or some of the applique fabrics. If you'd like to purchase the pattern but not join the BOM, it's available individually here.

Q: Can I participate if I don't live in the NYC area?
A: YES! Shipping is included in the price.

Q: Is the BOM available internationally?
A: We're sorry, but this one is available for shipping to US addresses only.

Q: What size is the quilt?
A: Finished size of regular Lovely Day: 41" x 57". Finished size of Lovely Day XL: 66" x 66"
