Sewing in the City -- April 2-5, 2020

Sewing in the City Logo

Join us for a 3-day quilting event in the heart of Manhattan!

Sewing in the City is sort of like a "reverse retreat" -- instead of going out into the woods/country to seclude ourselves and sew, we're bringing people into the heart of the greatest city in the world to learn from the best in the industry. Surround yourself with the energy of the city while we deep dive into new sewing and quilting concepts, stitch our hearts out, and form new lifelong friendships.

Our Venue

Sewing in the City takes place at the Gotham Quilts store in Midtown Manhattan and at the Residence Inn Times Square two blocks away from the store. One classroom is in the store, the other is in the hotel. We also have an event at a restaurant on the first night! (find out more below)

Our Teachers

Our guest teachers are Chawne Kimber and Jacquie Gering, two superstars of the modern quilt world. Both women are incredibly funny, generous people who bring unique skills and perspectives to quilting. We're super excited to get to learn from them!

What You Will Learn

Chawne is teaching Improvisational Lettering. Let’s say stuff with our patchwork! Chawne is inspired by the ideas of Tonya Ricucci in Word Play Quilts (out of print), but presented in Chawne's own way with tips and tricks learned from experience. This is an improvisational technique that can be used to make precision pieced or wonky results. We’ll practice a few common constructions and then you’ll try your hand at a phrase.

Jacquie is teaching Creative Quilting with the Walking Foot. Want to quilt your quilts on your home machine and maybe free motion quilting isn't for you? Come discover the joy and creative possibilities of quilting with your walking foot. Straight-line quilting has a long history and is making a comeback in both modern and traditional quilts. Learn tips and tricks for successful quilting with your walking foot along with creative quilting designs that can be accomplished on your home machine.

Workshop Setup

Workshops have 20 students in them and meet from 10am to 5pm, with a 1-hour lunch break, on Friday and Saturday. We can accommodate up to 40 students, who will be split up into two groups of 20. One group will attend the Improv Lettering Workshop first & the Creative Quilting Workshop second while the other group takes the two workshops in reverse order (in other words, each teacher is teaching the same workshop twice, once for each group of 20 students.)

BERNINA sewing machines are provided for use in the workshops. No need to lug your machine with you on the plane!

PLEASE NOTE: There is a flight of stairs to go up/down to reach the classroom.

Additional Events

The two workshops are the focus of Sewing in the City, of course, but we will also have some non-workshop fun!

Welcome Dinner

On the first night, we are having a welcome dinner at Becco in the Theater District. This is a time to get to know each other and have fun while eating at an iconic NYC restaurant. Here's our menu for the evening:
