Have you heard of “wideback” fabrics?
That’s the quilty term for extra-wide fabrics that are manufactured with quilt backings in mind. They usually come in a 108″ wide width (as opposed to the standard 42-45″ wi
dth of most quilting cottons), which means you can make a backing for a quilt as large as a queen or king size without needing to piece a single seam.
We know what it’s like to finish a quilt top and be itching to move onto the quilting, but get stalled because you have to pull a backing together. Widebacks remove that problem entirely! Not only is the time savings great, it’s also really nice to have a completely flat backing without any seams to go over when quilting.
There aren’t nearly as many fabrics available in 108″ width as there are in the 45″ width, and most of them tend more towards the traditional aesthetic. We’ve been asking manufacterers to offer a great selection of modern options, and they’ve started to listen! Check out some of the widebacks we have in stock now:
In the photo of our shelves above, you may have recognized the two bolts on the left as looking familiar… that’s because they’re wide widths from the brand new Diving Board collection!
The wide width is a blown up version of the “Pearl” print that comes in 42″ width. It has the large scale octopus as well as the hidden mermaids swimming in a sea of ocean flowers. We think these widebacks will sell out quickly, so don’t delay if you want some!
Moda has come out with an awesome twist on their classic Grunge blender for a backing: a polka dot grunge wide width! It’s called Grunge Hits the Spot and we picked three of the most versatile colors for you: Manilla, Pool, and White Paper.
If you love text prints as much as we do, you’ll be into this Newsprint Wide Widthdesigned by Carrie Bloomston for Windham Fabrics. We have a hard time keeping this one in stock!
Sometimes you want a backing that makes less of a statement, and for those quilts we have this great subtle “wave” texture quilt back from Bernatex Fabrics. As you can see from the photo of the shelf, the white is quite white — it’s nearly a white-on-white print, in fact.
We have so many options in stock, we can’t fit them all in one email! Be sure to click on through to see the other choices… there are 6 more widewidth fabrics in stock that aren’t in this blog post!
