Learn how to make the Island Bloom block, a modern Hawaiian inspired appliqued mini quilt with multiple layers of applique. In this workshop, you will learn how to prepare the applique (including folding, cutting and basting) and how to apply the motifs using needle-turn applique techniques. Learn how Sheri designed the block and how you can design custom templates for future projects. We’ll also review quilting tips. By the end of class, students will have most of the first layer basted and start practicing needle-turn applique. Finished size of project is approximately 24" x 24".
Sewing machines are not required for this class. It is a fun, relaxing slow-stitching virtual workshop.
Skill Level. This class is suitable for beginner level quilters. Basic hand sewing experience necessary.
Teacher: Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill of Whole Circle Studio
This class meets via Zoom at 10am-5pm Eastern time (NYC local time) on Saturday February 27th with a 1 hour lunch break. A Zoom invitation will be emailed the day before class. Sign-ups will close February 10th.
A pre-cut cardstock template will by mailed to you approx. 1 week before class. This template is included in your class fee.
Required supplies (All supplies available for purchase at Gotham Quilts):
- 24" x 24" quilting cotton for BACKGROUND that has been starched
- 22" x 22" AND 18" x 18" quilting cotton that has been starched for two layers of FLOWERS
- Thin cotton thread for applique that matches color of FLOWERS - preferably 80wt
- Thread for basting in a contrasting color. Any threaad will work
- Applique needles - preferably Tulip Big Eye Applique or Clover Black Gold Applique
- Applique Pins
- Regular Pins
- Fabric Scissors
- Fabric/Thread snips
- Seam Gauge with 1/4" marking
- Fabric marking pen?pencil
- Thread Conditioner
- Thimble and/or Adhesive Thimble Pads
- Longer/larger eye needle for basting (optional)
