Encrusted Embroidery: Elevating Your Favorite Fabrics - As makers, we all share a love of beautiful fabrics, whether for garment making, quilt making or just collecting for someday-projects! Taking the fabric you love to the next level and turning it into your own piece of art means acquiring an eye for embellishment and the possibilities in the lines, shapes and colors. Nichole will share her own "fabric story" and how she began to see her most beloved patterns as canvases with which to create. Just as a chef brings out the best flavors from raw ingredients, you will learn approaches Nichole has developed to heighten a fabric's best features. She will share the process behind her own pieces as well as the exciting and varied materials you can use to inspire your own. Leave the lecture teeming with ideas to encrust your favorite fabrics!
Meet Nichole
A self-taught embroidery artist, I spend time pairing color, pattern and fabric combinations to create modern hoop art. While growing up, my seamstress mother tried (unsuccessfully) to teach me how to sew. I then began experimenting with non-sewing related fiber arts, and my appreciation for them grew as I stashed embroidery floss to make friendship bracelets, dabbled in weaving and rug hooking and learned how to knit. It wasn’t until years later that something clicked and I discovered how captivating the world of fabric could be (and I finally, with help once again from my mom, learned how to wrangle a sewing machine!) In recent years, I discovered my love for creating contemporary hoop art embellished with freestyle embroidery, beads, sequins and lots of fiber!
