What Happens When Fabric Becomes a Voice?

In this inspiring and deeply personal talk, Lina Owen and Laura Duran, founders of Quilting with Latinas, explore how quilting can transcend craft and become a powerful tool for cultural preservation, representation, and healing.

As Latina makers in a space where they did not always see themselves reflected, Lina and Laura began creating bilingual quilt patterns and community spaces that honor language, heritage, and storytelling. Through their work—including their book Learn to Quilt: The Bilingual Guidebook—they are helping redefine what modern quilting looks like and who it belongs to.

This talk weaves together personal stories, cultural insight, and practical community-building strategies to show how creative spaces can become more inclusive, accessible, and transformative.
Attendees will leave inspired to see quilting—not just as a craft—but as a platform for identity, leadership, and connection.

Key Takeaways:

  • How quilting can serve as a vehicle for cultural storytelling
  • The importance of bilingual education in expanding creative communities
  • Practical ways to make craft spaces more inclusive and representative
  • How building community can begin with one shared thread
